Are you ready to tackle plumbing problems in 2021? The social challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that many of us have had to become a little more self-sufficient. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do yourself to prevent a plumbing emergency.

While you can get yourself into trouble when working on the plumbing underneath the kitchen sink, the toilet is something most DIY handy people can manage. Minor leaks in the toilet between the Water Tank and the bowl are quite often due to worn flappers. This is an easy and affordable fix with a kit you can purchase online or from your local hardware.

When you notice the water is slow to drain from the basin or sink, a plunger will fix most blockages if you get them early enough. Plungers are only a few dollars and are straightforward to use. Plus, they are much better for the environment than harsh drain-clearing chemicals. Every home should have a plunger, and for such a small amount, you can potentially save a significant amount of money. Drain snakes are another simple tool you can use to clear small blockages.

A dripping showerhead may just a new application of thread tape. A small leak can mean that the threads haven’t sealed tightly enough. Unscrew the showerhead, wrap the tape around the thread in a clockwise direction, and re-attach it. Thread tape is available in different colors – the white one is for plumbing.

Showerheads can clog from residue build-up, which you can remove by soaking them in warm water and vinegar for around an hour. Use a small brush to clear any accumulated mineral deposits.

If you decide to work on the pipes underneath the kitchen sink or bathroom cabinet, you may come across a few that are hard to budge with the pipe wrench. You can use heat to make them easier to remove.

A small blowtorch should be enough to do the trick but cover the surrounding area with heat resistant materials for safety. Please note, this tip is for metal pipes only. Do not use heat on plastic pipes, and never have an open flame around gas pipes. Sometimes, the best course of action is to call your local plumber like Plumbing Systems Inc.
